Six kids from Southern Maryland have a dream to compete in the International Submarine Races in June at the Carderock Naval Center in Bethesda, MD. Their ages range from 8-16 and they will be the youngest participants this year and maybe ever! They will be competing against corporate entities and college programs from around the world in this super-specialized category of man-powered vehicles.
Sam (16), Lydia (15), Teddy (13), Abby (12), Ella (10) and Sophie (8) met on the summer swim team and all share a love of science. After learning of the Intl. Submarine Races, the kids decided to build a submarine to further their knowledge ofscience and technology. They have put in many hours of time, energy, and sacrifice to get to this point. The team hasresearched the physics, made calculations, tested materials and learned much about organizing such a large project. A strong hull, drive train, steering system, life support and emergency systems were designed and a 1/2” scale model was built and drag tested. Please follow their progress as they fabricate and build their final submarine by hand to meet the June 22nd deadline.
